SPLINTS IN ORTHOPEDICS

Splints are devices used for immobilizing the fractures during transportation or during treatment. It can also be used in dislocation of joints.

COMMON SPLINTS AND USES:

1. crammer wire splint: emergency immobilisation.

2. thomas splint : fracture femur

3. bohler braun splint :fracture femur

4. dannis brown splint: congenital tallipes equino varus

5. cock up splint : radial nerve palsy

6. knuckle bender splint : ulnar nerve palsy

7. toe rising splint : foot drop

8. volkman's splint : volkman's ischaemic contracture.

CARE PF PATIENT WITH SPLINT :

1. splint should be properly applied and padded at the bony prominences.

2. splint should neither be too tight to cause ulcers and sores nor be too loose.

3. early diagnosis and treatment of nerve or vessel compression must be done if any.

4. patient should be encouraged to actively exercise the muscles and joints as much as permitted.

5. daily checking and adjustments should be made in the splints if required.
